Tumalo

Tumalo, OR

Tumalo, located in north-central Oregon's Deschutes County, is just northwest of Bend. This small community boasts a thriving population and gorgeous scenery, making it a central hub for outdoor living in sunny central Oregon. Situated along the Deschutes River, Tumalo offers a range of local attractions, including a state park, and provides residents and visitors with exceptional outdoor experiences..

The design for this home celebrates the Tumalo landscape with a sleek, one-story floor plan that extends in a cross-directional function. The layout features a main hallway that leads from the entry to all public and private spaces. The public space is conveniently located in the center of the home, with two wings that split into the private areas. To the east are two spacious en-suite bedrooms, and to the west is the private primary suite. The ceiling over the living space is elevated to create a more open feel that draws the eye upward, allowing for more light and space, with large floor-to-ceiling windows.

For the exterior, we've chosen Japanese Shou Sugi Ban boards. This is a traditional Japanese building technique that offers protection from insects, wood rot, and fire by charring the surface of the wood. This plays a crucial role in material selection for the landscape and harshness of central Oregon weather. The Shou Sugi Ban vertical boards wrap around the exterior, playing as an offset to the elongated board-formed concrete wall that connects the exterior to the interior hallway of the home. Two concrete fireplaces share a similar design but are separated, one in the living space and the other an outdoor firepit on the southern side. The roof features a black aluminum fascia that wraps around the home, with a western red cedar soffit to bring warmth to the materials palette.
